Maison de vacances ★★★
Egypte, Mer Rouge, El Gouna Golf
The villa is in a nice position in El Gouna's Golf Area with views across the lagoon to the golf course. There is a nice big swimming pool and you can also swim in the lagoon with direct access from the front garden.
Unfortunately, the villa was in poor condition and very badly decorated.
The furniture in the living area was incredibly uncomfortable (wooden "Arabic" style benches with rather dirty scatter-cushions) and we couldn't sit for any length of time or relax with family members. The blinds in the kitchen/dining area didn't open, as all the draw-strings had broken years ago.
The TV was small and only offered a limited number of channels (very few in English or Egyptian, which are our interests) and the picture quality was terrible. We couldn't get the DVD player to work, so that didn't offer any consolation.
The kitchen utensils, plates, glasses, mugs, etc were a disgrace. When we arrived there was a total of 6 old, cracked, glasses and plastic tumblers, non of which matched (we were a party of 10, which Interhome knew from our booking). There was no tea-pot, coffee-pot or other method to make beverages. After complaining to Interhome they bought some new glasses and and cheap metal tea-pot from the local supermarket, but it's not what you would expect from a Euro 2000/week property. If you plan to sit around the pool sipping wine, I suggest you bring some wine glasses with you.
The bed linen was clean but very poor quality. Really thin cotton that appeared to have been washed a thousand times. Pillows were old and tired and smelled vaguely musty. The first night we didn't sleep at all but, like everything else, we got used to it. However, it wasn't any kind of pleasure to go to bed, and certainly not what most Europeans would expect on their holidays. Interhome didn't supply any duvets or other bedclothes (sheets only), but did bring us some cheap looking blankets, when we complained. Don't expect luxury Egyptian cotton, or any of the niceties that are standard issue even in fairly ordinary hotels these days.
If it was completely redecorated and refurnished, this could be a really nice villa. However, in it's present state we really couldn't recommend it.
But, don't let that put you off El Gouna, which is a great place for a family holiday or if you enjoy water sports.
